San Diego Proposes $25 Hour Minimum Wage for Tourism & Event Workers

San Diego is considering a major shift in how hospitality and event work is valued.

City leaders have introduced a proposal to phase in a $25 per hour minimum wage for workers in hotels, event centers, amusement parks, and related businesses, including venues like Petco Park and large convention spaces. Read more here: http://bit.ly/4h77pdf

This proposal highlights that behind every big event, whether sports, concerts, or conventions, there is a workforce that often goes unseen. As the United States prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States and builds momentum toward LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games, demand for large scale operations, logistics, staffing, and venue services will only grow.

Here are three things to keep in mind:

🔸 Higher wages may encourage organizations to rethink efficiency and automation, and when applied thoughtfully these upgrades can improve resilience and quality of service.

🔸The proposal could reshape supplier landscapes. Companies that can deliver through technology, modular systems, or smart staffing tools may find new opportunities.

🔸Event budgets will need to adjust. Building fair labor costs into planning early helps strengthen relationships with partners and stakeholders.

This topic connects directly to insights from our Doing Business in The U.S. Through Dutch Eyes Series with Jeroen (Jay) Boersma. where he touches on how wage structures and cultural expectations in the U.S. impact business. You can watch that episode here:http://bit.ly/48fL2zK

If you work in event logistics, venue technology, staffing platforms, or sustainable infrastructure, we would be glad to connect. This is a turning point for the industry, and we are here to help bridge Dutch innovation with the U.S. market.

We will also be at the LA Sports Innovation Conference next week, which will be an excellent place to continue this conversation.
